Barbara Katz at home

Barbara Katz, Founder

I have been designing and building gardens for over 30 years. I first studied in England with John Brookes, a gifted teacher and landscape designer.  I then joined Blooming Gardens in London, where I learned every aspect of garden installation, including laying York stone patios with stone that was 4″ thick! This hands-on work has informed my business. I want to be involved in every aspect of creating a garden, hence my sole focus on design and build.

From the first meeting with customers where we brainstorm on the garden’s potential and begin to craft the master ‘wish list’, through schematics, construction drawings and planting plans, I am involved and personally responsible for every phase.  I’m fortunate to have extraordinary masons who understand the nuances of detailed hardscapes.  Finally, plants are my passion – I personally select and plant with my crew, every tree, shrub and perennial that go into my gardens. Call me crazy but I love it!

Recent highlights include working closely with Piet Oudolf at the developing Delaware Botanic Gardens and collaborating with Brookside Gardens in Maryland to create a new public garden there. I have served on the board of numerous landscape organizations and believe in giving back. I travel whenever time and budget allow.  The exploration of gardens all over the world never fails to educate and inspire me, and this collective creativity informs all the gardens I am fortunate to craft with wonderful customers.
